In 2017 the Foundation took ownership of the copyrights and trademarks which were in Momo’s possession at the time of his endowment to the entity. As representatives of the artist, the Foundation takes very seriously its responsibility to uphold and enhance his legacy. The Foundation is committed to making Momo’s work accessible to audiences, scholars and critics around the world, and to supporting and encouraging new scholarship.
The Sahlan Momo Foundation (SMF) is the owner and guardian of the copyrights of all Sahlan Momo images in all media, whether the work is in the collection of the Sahlan Momo Foundation or in a public or private collection.
Prior to any publication whether in print or electronic media, the rights to reproduce any image or text by Sahlan Momo must be cleared with the SMF.
Momo’s artworks, writings, publishing, and philanthropic activities continue to inspire creative thinkers worldwide. The licensing program seeks out partnerships with those who understand the relevance of his practice to contemporary visual and knowledge culture. Revenues generated through licensing fees support an increasing number of the Foundation’s activities.
The SMF retains all rights, including copyright, in all paintings, drawings, sculptures, graphic works, films, choreographies, and writings by Sahlan Momo. The Foundation distinguishes between commercial requests and non-commercial requests. In an effort to encourage scholars to make use of Momo images and writings, the Foundation charges only nominal fees to those wishing to use them for educational and creative purposes. Please note that we do not hold the copyright in some materials such as photographs of artwork under copyright by the photographer or the photographer’s heirs. The Foundation rigorously protects itself against unauthorized uses of its copyrights and trademarks. Through outside counsel and in conjunction with Artists Rights Society and its sister societies worldwide, the Foundation aggressively pursues and takes appropriate action against all unlawful uses of its intellectual property.
